The project began in 2009 as a bootable USB stick at BRERC, the Environmental Records Centre for the West of England. Server-on-a-Stick ran from a spare PC on the local network and provided occasional interesting demos. The potential cost-effectiveness of this approach was immediately apparent.
In the next ten years the project grew to fill a number of gaps in the centre's day-to-day IT operations, as well as delivering information to a wider audience. First a sophisticated database was established, and then a comprehensive web serving capability added.
Today the LIVE Services infrastructure comprises an innovative array of local and remote live-booting servers, working together to offer potentially ground-breaking applications. We strive to add value by combining existing freely available resources, and continue to eschew malware.
The material released in 2023 constitute an important 'catch-update'.
